After relinquishing his number one ranking on Saturday, Matthew Sates won the 400m individual medley on Sunday to stay in the hunt to finish top of the FINA World Cup standings with the competition’s final leg set to get underway on Thursday, 3 November.
Sates started well on Friday, winning bronze in the men’s 100m medley with a time of 51.87, before winning gold in the men’s 400m freestyle with a time of 3:37.52. Le Clos’ also started with a bang on Friday, securing gold in the men’s 100m butterfly with a time of 48.88.
Sates’s Saturday was less prolific as the youngster was unable to gain a podium finish and ended up losing his first place standing in the FINA World Cup rankings after finishing fourth in the men’s 200m medley, but Le Clos kept climbing as he bagged silver in the men’s 200 metre butterfly event with a time of 1:49.78.
