TSA mourns the loss of Masters legend Petro Kruger
It is with great sadness that Tennis South Africa announces the passing of Petro Kruger, a true legend of Masters tennis, at the age of 78. Petro's remarkable career and unwavering passion for the sport have left an indelible mark on the tennis community, both in South Africa and internationally.
Petro was not only an exceptional sportswoman but also a versatile athlete. In addition to her representation of the National Seniors Tennis Teams, she participated in Interprovincial Squash and League Golf. Nevertheless, tennis held a special place in her heart. During her time in the USA, she participated in numerous regional tournaments, emerging victorious on many occasions. She played at the Benoni Country Club where she reigned as the club champion for several years. Her dedication to the game led her to be a valued member of various Interprovincial Tennis Teams, representing South Africa Seniors for an impressive span of 25 years.
Not only was Petro a force on the court, but she also dedicated her expertise to coaching tennis. She accompanied her daughter, Joannette, on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tour for several years, sharing her knowledge and love for the game. Subsequently, she turned her attention to her own tennis career and began competing internationally in senior tournaments starting in 1994.
Petro's inaugural appearance at the ITF World Seniors Championships in San Francisco marked the beginning of her reign as a singles champion in the Ladies over 50 category. Her success continued as she regularly participated in the ITF Seniors Tour, triumphing in multiple ITF Seniors Tournaments in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. In total, she earned an impressive tally of two ITF Singles, eight ITF Doubles, and four ITF Mixed Doubles World Titles.
In a fitting finale to her illustrious career, Petro concluded her journey on the court at the invitational Friendship Cup in Austria on May 25, 2023. Representing the International team against the USA team, she and her teammates emerged victorious, securing a memorable win in this prestigious event. Just a week prior, on June 2, 2023, Petro showcased her exceptional skills by claiming both the singles and doubles titles at the Austrian ITF Tournament for Ladies over 75 years. Unbeknownst to many, she fought relentlessly during these competitions while silently battling undiagnosed cancer—an unwavering testament to her resilience and determination.
Petro's competitive spirit, tenacity, and unwavering resolve made her an extraordinary athlete. Her absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt throughout the tennis world. She will forever be remembered as a revered Masters Legend of tennis, not only in South Africa but across the globe.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Petro Kruger's family and friends during this difficult time,. May they find solace in the memories of her remarkable achievements and the profound impact she had on the sport she loved.
