Tennis | Team SA Paralympians in 2025 Aussie Open action

While the first tennis Grand Slam event of the year is taking place in Melbourne, there are no South Africans in the draw for the men’s and women’s singles, nor in any of the doubles competitions.

However, there is representation in the wheelchair tennis event at the Australian Open from next week. In the women’s singles Kgothatso Montjane (pictured) will enter the competition ranked 7th, while Mariska Venter has reached the main draw as a wildcard.

In the men’s quad singles, Paris Paralypmian Donald Ramphadi is ranked No7. 

The Australian Open wheelchair tennis main draws are scheduled for 21th January to 25th January. The qualifying events, beginning on 20th January, feature hopefuls vying for a place in the main draw.

With the Australian Open currently under way, South Africa’s leading men’s player in the ATP rankings is Lloyd Harris, who is at No135, with Philip Henning (No326) and Kris van Wyk (No 361) the other two South African men in the world’s top 500.

In the men’s doubles world rankings, the leading South African is Kris van Wyk at No386.

When it comes to the women.s official WTA rankings, there are three South Africans in the top 1,000 of the women’s singles. Isabella Kruger is at No700, Zoe Kruger at No759 and Gabriella Broadfoot at No940.
