Tennis | Quarterfinals of the Curro Centre Court Series
The quarterfinals of the Curro Centre Court Series in Hillcrest brought further excitement and drama, especially for the South African players in the men’s draw, who continued their winning streaks to secure places in the semifinals.
In the men’s event, second-seeded South African Philip Henning battled past Bulgarian eighth seed Alexander Donski to secure a semifinal spot. Henning endured a tough three-set match, taking a tight first set 7-5, dropping the second set 3-6, but bouncing back to dominate the third set 6-2. He will face compatriot and sixth seed Alec Beckley, who continued his impressive form by stunning the third seed Aryan Shah of India with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 victory.
In another standout match, Devin Badenhorst delivered a dominant performance against Luc Koenig, who had knocked out the top seed Kris van Wyk earlier in the week. Badenhorst swept the first set 6-0 and secured a 6-4 win in the second. He will face Namibian qualifier Connor Van Schalkwyk, who eased past Jesse Flores from Costa Rica with a 6-2, 6-3 victory to secure his place in the semifinals.
On the women’s side, South African hopes were dashed as Jahnie van Zyl, the last local player remaining in the women's singles, was defeated by Italy's fifth-seeded Matilde Mariani. Despite a valiant effort in the second set, van Zyl couldn't recover from a 0-6 first set and eventually succumbed 5-7 in the second.
