KG, Donald bow out at Melbourne Open
South African wheelchair tennis stars Kgothatso 'KG' Montjane and Donald Ramphadi both exited the Melbourne Open after losing in straight sets in the singles quarterfinal and doubles semifinal rounds, in their respective divisions.
Montjane, South Africa's world No.6 women's player, was eliminated in the last eight stages 6-2, 6-3 by Dutch top seed Diede de Groot. Montjane and her Japanese partner Manami Tanaka were eliminated in the semifinals of the doubles competition by top seeds De Groot and Aniek van Koot of the Netherlands, 6-1, 6-1.
Ramphadi, who is ranked fifth in the world, lost in the quads semifinals to Dutch second seed Sam Schroder 6-2, 6-2, and also went down in the doubles quarterfinals with Brazilian partner Ymanitu Silva. The duo were defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Dutch top seeds Schroder and Niels Vink.
The duo will next compete in the Australian Open Wheelchair Championships, which will take place in Melbourne from Tuesday, January 24, 2023.
