This episode spotlights 33-year-old triathlete Mhlengi Gwala, his inspiring tale of overcoming a tragic accident to compete at the highest level showcases the true spirit of a Paralympian.
Growing up in a small township in Durban, Gwala hasn't had an easy road to the Paralympic Games. With jobs in short supply, he began swimming to land a job as a lifeguard. It was the first of many defining moments: in the water he not only discovered his new passion, but those first strokes also marked the beginning of his triathlete career. He showed incredible dedication to the sport, participating in numerous competitions wherein he built a reputation as a relentless competitor.
In 2018 his life took a tragic turn, Mlhengi was attacked during a training session in which his assailants attempted to sever his legs with a chainsaw. They sawed into the calf of his right leg, damaging the nerves, muscles and bones beyond repair. Gwala's indomitable spirit saw him make an inspiring recovery. With unwavering perseverance, he navigated a long and challenging rehabilitation. Gwala's story gained international attention, drawing support from the global sporting community, including financial assistance from fellow athletes.
"I can't wait to represent my country. As a father of three, I draw inspiration from my family, who motivate me to succeed on the biggest stage of them all. I firmly believe sport connects people regardless of their race, background, or culture - without sports, I do not know where I would be today."
His participation in the 2024 Paralympic Games won't just highlight his personal triumphs but will also shine the spotlight on the strength and potential of SA athletes on the world stage
