Rugby | SA U20s face a powerful Argentinean side in their third and final fixture of the Under-20 Rugby Championship

Junior Boks want to finish on a positive note

The Junior Springboks have worked hard to rectify their inconsistencies and mistakes and want to play to their true potential when they face Argentina in their final Under-20 Rugby Championship match on Saturday afternoon at the Sunshine Coast Stadium in Bokarina, Queensland in Australia.

That is what Lumumba Currie, Junior Bok assistant coach, wants to see from the SA U20s when they face a powerful Argentinean side in their third and final fixture of the SANZAAR tournament. The Junior Boks lost their previous match 24-19 to Australia after their opening match against New Zealand finished in a 13-all draw.

“We’ve worked hard on our detail and to rectify the mistakes which hurt us against Australia,” said Currie, who described Argentina as a well-drilled team with their strong pack of forwards leading the onslaught.

“Argentina have a solid set piece and they generate good momentum from their forward play, so we will have to be ready to meet that challenge.”

Against Australia, several scoring opportunities were spilled because of a frustratingly high error rate, which included loss of possession in contact and a few missed lineouts close to the opposing try line.

“We want to see an improvement in our set piece play, our discipline must be better, and we have to look after our possession more strongly,” emphasised Currie.

“In the two previous games we managed to create several chances, but our execution let us down, so we hope to see an improvement on that front, because we have worked hard on that aspect during training.

“We have only seen glimpses of good play so far; we are capable of playing much better and to do that we must create better momentum and give our exciting backs a solid platform to show their skills on attack.”

The match starts at 13h30 (05h30 SA time) and will be broadcast live on SuperSport.
