A total of 69 tries and 437 points were scored on day one at Paris 2024. The second session saw one less try scored than the opening six matches with 34 and 216 points compared to 35 tries and 221 points.
General Statistics
Fiji have scored the most tries in the tournament after two sessions of play (12) and are the top point scorers (78).
Five teams won both matches on the opening on day one in Ireland and New Zealand (Pool A), Australia and Argentina (Pool B) and Fiji (Pool C), confirming their places in the medal quarter-finals. Hosts France are also unbeaten in Pool C after a draw and a win.
New Zealand’s Ngarohi McGarvey-Black is the top try-scorer after day one with three, while Fiji’s Iowane Teba tops the point-scoring charts with 20.
Matías Osadczuk (Argentina), Chay Mullins (Ireland) and Moses Leo (New Zealand) scored a brace of tries in the second session, joining six players from the opening session in Henry Hutchison (Australia), Agustín Fraga (Argentina), Joji Nasovo (Fiji), Akuila Rokolisoa, Fehi Fineanganofo and Ngarohi McGarvey-Black (New Zealand).
The higher seeded team (Team 1) have won 11 of the 12 matches on day one with the other ending in a 12-12 draw – the first in men’s Olympic history.

Match 7 – Australia 21-7 Kenya – Pool B
Australia have won their first two pool matches at an Olympic Games for the first time, having won one of two matches on day one in Rio and Tokyo.
They have qualified for the medal quarter-finals but the meeting with Argentina in session three will determine whether that is as Pool B winners or runners-up.
Corey Toole scored his first try for Australia since crossing against Ireland at Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022 in Cape Town.
Kenya have now lost all eight of their pool matches on the Olympic stage.
Match 8 – Argentina 28-12 Samoa – Pool B
Argentina have won their first two pool matches at an Olympic Games for the first time. They had a record of won one, lost one on the opening days of Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
They have qualified for the medal quarter-finals but the meeting with Australia in session three will determine whether that is as Pool B winners or runners-up.
Argentina have beaten Samoa on French soil for the first time, having lost all four previous SVNS series matches – including the last two in Paris in 2017 and 2019.
This is their eighth consecutive win over Samoa dating back to the Los Angeles round of the SVNS series in 2023.
Matías Osadczuk became the second Los Pumas Sevens player to score a brace at Paris 2024, following on from Agustín Fraga in their opener against Kenya.
Match 9 – France 19-12 Uruguay – Pool C
France are unbeaten after the opening day for the first time, having won one and lost one at their only previous Olympic Games in 2016.
They trailed half-time against both USA and Uruguay, turning around 7-5 down in both matches.
Uruguay have scored 12 points in each of their matches with Juan González among their try-scorers against both Fiji and France.
Match 10 – Fiji 38-12 Usa – Pool C
Fiji’s winning run at the Olympic Games now stretches to 14 matches.
Fiji are the only side to score five tries in a half at Paris 2024 with their six tries against USA all scored by different players.
Two of Fiji’s try-scorers – Selesitino Ravutaumada and Iosefo Masi – were part of their country’s run to the Rugby World Cup 2023 quarterfinals in France last October.
USA have failed to win one of their opening two matches at an Olympic Games for the first time.
Match 11 – Ireland 40-5 Japan – Pool A
Ireland have won two pool matches for the first time at an Olympic Games, having lost their opening two matches at Tokyo 2020.
Forty points is the most Ireland have scored in an Olympic match, surpassing the 31 points scored against the Republic of Korea in Tokyo.
Japan have now lost their last five pool matches on the Olympic stage and have won just one of their last nine matches (the 11th place playoff at Tokyo 2020).
Match 12 – New Zealand 17-5 South Africa – Pool A
New Zealand have beaten South Africa for the first time outside of the SVNS series. This was their fourth meeting away from the series, with South Africa victorious in the 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medal match, RWC Sevens 1993 pool stage and RWC Sevens 2007 semi-finals.
They are also the first to win back-to-back matches this season with the four previous meetings on the SVNS 2024 series having alternated between the teams.
New Zealand have now won five Olympic pool matches in a row, having lost two of their three at Rio 2016.
South Africa have lost two pool matches at an Olympic Games for the first time, having only lost one across both Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
Moses Leo is the fourth New Zealand player to score a brace of tries at Paris 2024.
