South Africa Womens team secure a place in the inaugural FIH Hockey5s World Cup

South Africa Women Qualify for the Hockey5s World Cup

South Africa took on the hosts Egypt today with a place in the FIH Hockey5s World Cup in Oman 2024 up for Grabs. The opportunity to take part in the inaugural World Cup was motivation enough for Coach Pholo and her charges as they looked ahead to the game.

Despite the nerves possibly overwhelming the young South African side they settled into the game quickly and were able to take a 2-0 lead into the half-time break courtesy of Sylvia van Jaarsveldt netting two for herself. The first came from a brilliant run down the side from Izelle Cillers down the right leaving van Jaarsveldt a simple tap in. The same duo combined again for the second this time from far deeper. South Africa led 2-0 at the break.

Rea Phume was the first to strike in the second half with a long-range effort that nestled into the bottom left. Teshawn de la Rey got in on the action with a long-range effort that looped over the keeper and into the goal as South Africa began booking their ticket to Muscat.

A penalty stroke was awarded to the South Africans and Lezaan Jansen van Vuren finished superbly. Toni Marks got in on the action with a deft reverse stick finish before in the dying seconds Sylvia van Jaarsveldt completed her hat-trick and sent the South Africans to Muscat.

The objective for the team on departure was to secure a place in the inaugural FIH Hockey5s World Cup. The team have now achieved that and will begin plans over the next 13 months to ensure the team is ready to represent in Oman.
