Hockey | South African goalkeeper Siya Nolutshungu calls time on his international career
South African Hockey today pays tribute to Siyavuya Nolutshungu, who has announced his retirement from international hockey. The talented goalkeeper earned 46 test caps for the national side and was part of more than 70 matchday squads during a career that spanned eight years.

Nolutshungu made his debut in 2017 at the Cape Town Summer Series against the Netherlands. Since then, he has proudly represented South Africa at the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games, as well as the country’s only FIH Pro League campaign in 2022.
In confirming his decision, Nolutshungu shared:
“After much reflection, I have decided to retire from international field hockey. Wearing the green and gold has been nothing short of an honour and one of the greatest privileges of my life. Representing South Africa on the world stage has given me unforgettable memories, lifelong friendships, and lessons that extend far beyond the field.
I hope that, in my time with the national team, I have left the shirt in a better space than when I first put it on. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together and grateful to every coach, teammate, staff member, and supporter who believed in me and the vision of South African hockey. I will continue to contribute back to South African Hockey where I can off the field.
To the current and future players, I wish you nothing but success. Keep pushing the boundaries, keep inspiring the next generation, and continue to make our country proud. Thank you for the opportunity to pursue my dream.”
SA Hockey High Performance Executive, Reggie Smith, expressed gratitude for Nolutshungu’s commitment and impact:
“Siya has been a true servant of South African hockey, giving his best every time he pulled on the jersey. His work ethic, professionalism, and leadership both on and off the field have set a standard for others to follow. We thank him for his years of service, the memories he created, and the inspiration he has provided to so many young players. We wish him every success as he steps into the next chapter of his journey.
