Hockey | SA Men’s Hockey Team Named for African Cup of Nations in Egypt

The South African Men’s Hockey team has been confirmed for the 11th African Cup of Nations, set to take place from 11–18 October 2025 in Ismailia, Egypt. The tournament winner will earn Africa’s only qualification spot for the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Since their readmission into international sport, South Africa’s men have dominated the continental showpiece, winning all eight editions they have contested. This includes the 2017 tournament, also held in Ismailia, where they lifted the trophy in style. The 2025 edition will be another opportunity for the team to extend their unmatched legacy on African soil.

There will be five debutants in the 18 man squad with Ayakha Mthalane, Cullin de Jager, Brendan du Toit, Neil Raath and Ryan Mann will all don the national colours for the first time. With Just six of the players having 50 or more caps the likes of Keenan Horne, Nic Spooner and Dayaan Cassiem will need to lead from the front for the SA Men.

Reflecting on the challenge ahead, SA Hockey high performance director Reggie Smith said:

“We have an incredible track record at the African Cup of Nations, but we take nothing for granted. Every team will go to Egypt determined to stop us. This group is ready for that fight – our goal is clear: retain the title and book our ticket to the World Cup.”

The South African Men’s Hockey team will begin their campaign on 11 October, with the final set for 18 October in Ismailia.
