South African Hockey continues to punch above its weight on the international stage and leave an undeniable mark on the sport globally. South Africa has once again been recognised by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) by having two nominees in the FIH Hockey Star Awards. The Awards are hockeys equivalent to the FIFA Best Awards and are the highest individual accolades available for International hockey stars.
SA Mens Head Coach Garreth Ewing has been nominated in the coach of the year category. In the year under review “Springs” led the SA Hockey Men to an African Title in Ghana as well as to the Commonwealth Games Semi-Finals, the first time in 20 years the SA Men have done this. The Men are undoubtedly the global communities second team as they play a brand of hockey that is quintessentially proudly South African.
SA Womens Goalkeeper and co-captain Phumelela Mbande has been a world class keeper for a number of years for the African Champions. The Chartered Accountant raised her even higher this year as she was acknowledged for her fine performances for the country by being named one of Mail & Guardians 200 Young South Africans as well as being the flag bearer for the South African team at the Tokyo Olympics.
The new voting process includes an Expert Group, whose votes will count for 40% of the overall result. Votes from National Associations, represented by their respective national teams’ captains and coaches, will count for a further 20%. The fans and other players (20%) as well as media (20%) will make the remaining 40%.
The voting process will remain open till 30 September at midnight CEST, with the winners for all categories being announced in early October 2022. As such members of the media are encouraged to register their votes in this years FIH Hockey Star Awards as follows:
