Golf | Lawrence starts 2025 as SA’s Number1 golfer

The first Monday of 2025 also brings the first official men’s golf rankings of the year and there are three South Africans listed in the top 100.

The trio are headed by Thriston Lawrence, who closed off last year at a career high No45 and is this week at No46. He is followed by the two men who represeted Team SA at the Paris Olympics, Christiaan Bezuidenhout (54th) and Erik van Rooyen (74th).

There are a further three South Africans ranked between 100 and 200, namely Dean Burmester, who plays on the LIV Series  and is at No112, Shaun Norris at 122 and another LIV member, Louis Oosthuizen, at 198.

Six South Africans feature between 200 and 300, including Team SA Olympian from 2016, Brandon Stone, who begins the year at No247. Garrick Higgo, who was at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, is at No304.

In the Rolex Women’s Rankings, two-time Olympian Ashleigh Buhai is South Africa’s top player at No57, followed by Cassandra Alexander (143) and Paul Reto (175).
