Cycling | Eyabantwana Trust launches Heritage Ride 2025 in support of children's surgery
The Eyabantwana Trust has been making a life-changing difference in paediatric surgery for over 12 years. Established as a local NPO to support the Department of Paediatric Surgery in East London, the Trust raises funds to purchase essential surgical equipment and provide training that the Department of Health is unable to fund.

Since its inception, the Trust has donated more than R4 million in vital equipment and training, benefitting young patients at both Frere Hospital and Cecilia Makiwane Hospital.
This year marks a milestone, as the Trust purchased its largest item to date — a Flexible Gastroscope valued at R830,000. This specialised instrument allows doctors to look inside a child's digestive tract using a thin, flexible tube with a camera, making it possible to diagnose and treat serious conditions without the need for invasive surgery. It has already become a critical tool in the dedicated paediatric surgical theatre at Frere Hospital.
Earlier in 2025, the Grandads Army Memorial Ride raised R550,000 towards this purchase. To raise the outstanding R300,000, the Trust will now launch the Heritage Ride.
From 6–19 October 2025, a group of 7 cyclists will take on the challenge of riding over 100 km every day, from Mapungubwe to East London. Along the way, they will pass through UNESCO World Heritage Sites and National Heritage Sites, highlighting South Africa's rich cultural and natural heritage. Their previous journeys have been documented on the Eyabantwana Trust's YouTube channel for those who wish to review it, showcasing the landscapes and stories along the route.
The Heritage Ride is more than just a cycling challenge, it is a vital fundraising initiative that directly supports children who need specialised surgical care. It is led by Professor Colin Lazarus, founder of the Eyabantwana Trust, Trustee, and Paediatric Surgeon, whose vision has guided the organisation since its beginning.
"The Heritage Ride is about honouring our past, celebrating our heritage, and creating a healthier future for our children," says Prof. Lazarus. "Every contribution, big or small, helps us bring hope and healing to young patients who depend on us."
Community members, businesses, and supporters are invited to get involved by donating to the Heritage Ride campaign or sharing the story to raise awareness. Donations are eligible for a Section 18A Tax Certificate, available on request.
