Cricket | SA 20 | DSG vs MICT Falls Short Of League's Sixes Record

The ‘sixes in a Betway SA20 match’ record held by Pretoria Capitals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape lives to fight another day after rain cut short Durban’s Super Giants and MI Cape Town’s plundering on Thursday evening.

At the time that the players left the field - just after 21:00 - on Thursday (ultimately ending in DSG claiming the win via DLS method), 23 sixes had been deposited over the boundary at Kingsmead. That left them just one short of the League-high 24 which Pretoria Capitals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape achieved just six matches into the inaugural season, on 14 January 2023 at Centurion.

During our daily poll we asked how many 6s will be hit during the DSGvMICT match. The answer was 23, but the highest responders (35%) went for 15-19. Next best - 28% was the correct range of 20-24, while an optimistic 17% went for over 25. Thankfully, the 20% who predicted 'less than 15' were way off the mark.

That day, Capitals’ Will Jacks smacked eight sixes on his way to 92 off just 46 balls. The Englishman’s teammates contributed a further eight, from the bat of Theunis de Bruyn (4), Rilee Rossouw (1), Jimmy Neesham (1), Shane Dadswell (1) and Migael Pretorius as Capitals set 216/6.

In the end, Sunrisers fell 37 runs short in their chase, but not before contributing eight sixes themselves to the match total - courtesy of Sarel Erwee (1), Jon-Jon Smuts (1), Aiden Markram (2), Marco Jansen (3) and Brydon Carse (1).

Durban's Super Giants' Heinrich Klaasen hit eight sixes during Thursday's first Season 2 match at Kingsmead.

The catalyst to Thursday’s big hitting was MI Cape Town’s Ryan Rickelton. The left-handed batter smashed six sixes in his knock of 87 off 51. His opening partner Rassie van der Dussen added one too before MICT’s rookie Connor Esterhuizen (2), Liam Livingstone (3) and Kieron Pollard took the men in blue’s tally to 13.

Heinrich Klaasen, meanwhile, showed why he is such a destructive player in white-ball cricket as he sent eight sixes flying all over Kingsmead on his way to a Player of the Match innings of 85 off 35. DSG’s other two sixes were hit by opener Matthew Breetzke.

The next Betway SA20 Season two fixtures for Thursday's teams are: MI Cape Town at Joburg Super Kings (Saturday, 13 January at 13:30) and followed by Sunrisers Eastern Cape hosting Durban's Super Giants (at 17:30).
