Cricket | Eastern Province Kept Badgers From Platinum Section At Khaya Khaya Majola Week

The aspirations of the Garden Route Badgers u/19 team to gain promotion to the Platinum section (for next year) was stopped by Eastern Province at the final day of the Khaya Majola week that came to an end in Cape Town on Friday, December 20th.

The Six Gun Grill Garden Route Badgers team that participated in the Cricket South Africa Khaya Majola National Cricket tournament is:

Back Row:  Sherwin Plaatjies, Stefan May, Kurt Botha, Trent Huisamen, Adriaan van der Merwe, Corné Kennedy, Igcobe Kitshini, Jesse Lewis and Camron Avontuur

Front Row:  Keith Wagner (Team Manager), Enathi Kitshini, Wynand de Ridder (Head Coach), Josef Enslin (Captain), Warren Bell (Assistant Coach), Keano Coericius and Livewe Buwuli

The match was played at the Jacques Kallis Oval at Wynberg Boys High School. After winning a crucial toss Eastern Province opted to bat first.

Cayden Wilson from Eastern Province produced a good all-round performance to help his side to a 22-run victory over the Badgers. He scored 21 runs with the bat as Kian Cambier (50) and Esa Gangat (32) top-scored for the side. Wilson, then, picked up four wickets for only 17 runs to keep the Badgers at bay. Enathi Kitshini’s all-round performance for the Badgers was not enough as he excels with both bat (31 runs) and ball (3/18).

The Badgers ended with three victories out of their five 50-over matches at the prestigious tournament.

On the opening day Easterns (166/9) scraped a nail-biting one-run victory over the Badgers (154 all out).

The Badgers (74/2) on the second day bounced back with a clinical performance to defeat Mpumalanga by 8 wickets.  Enathi Kitshini with (2/9) with the ball and 29* with the bat earned himself the man-of-the-match award.

On the third day at the UCT Oval the Badgers restricted Limpopo to 146 with Kitshini (4/42) and Corne Kennedy (3/19) the bowling heroes.  Solid batting performances by Keano Coerecius (49) and Camron Avontuur (42) steered the Badgers to a 7-wicket victory.  Coerecius was named man-of-the-match.

On the second last day at the scenic South African Schools College (SACS) Oval in Newlands the Badgers thumped the strong CSA Invitational XI by 5 wickets. The Badgers restricted the Invitational XI to 146 with Enathi Kitshini (3/20), Trent Huisamen (2/15) and Stefan May (2/40) the outstanding bowlers.  A solid batting performance by opener, Camron Avontuur (76), who was the stand-out batter for the Badgers earned him the man-of-the-match award. Kithsini provided good support with an innings of 28.

Easterns won by 1 wicket.

Day 2:  Mpumalanga vs Garden Route Badgers (at Curro High School;  Durbanville)

MPUMALANGA 73 (John Duncan 27; Corné Kennedy 3/17, Enathi Kitshini 2/9, Shirwin Plaatjies 2/15, Liviwe Bawuli 2/15) GARDEN ROUTE BADGERS 74/2 (Enathi Kitshini 29*; Curtleigh Koetzee 1/14). Garden Route Badgers won by 8 wickets.

Day 3:  Limpopo vs Garden Route Badgers (at UCT Main Oval)

LIMPOPO 146 (Lukas van der Merwe 57, Victor Sehata 32, Enathi Kitshini 4/32; Corné Kennedy 3/19) GARDEN ROUTE BADGERS 147/3 (Keano Coerecius 49, Camron Avontuur 42)  Garden Route Badgers won by 7 wickets.

Day 4:  SA Invitational XI vs Garden Route Badgers (at SACS)

SA INVITATIONAL XI 146 (Vihan Pretorius 31, Zuko Pontshi 24, Enathi Kitshini 3/20, Trent Huisamen 2/15) GARDEN ROUTE BADGERS 150/4 (Camron Avontuur 76, Enathi Kitshini 28, Adam Cannata 2/32) Garden Route Badgers won by 5 wickets.

Day 5:  Garden Route Badgers vs Eastern Province (at the Jacques Kallis Oval at Wynberg Boys High)

EASTERN PROVINCE 139 (Kian Cambier 50, Esa Gangat 32, Cayden Wilson 21; Enathi Kitshini 3/18, Liviwe Bawuli 3/18) GARDEN ROUTE BADGERS 117 (Enathi Kitshini 31, Keano Coerecius 24; Cayden Wilson 4/17, Likhona Gcora 2/16, Hamza Khan 2/23). Eastern Province won by 22 runs.
