South African Masters paddlers open team medal account with six medals
SA Masters open marathon medal account
The South African paddlers opened the team medal account with six medals on the first day of the Masters Cup event that precedes the start of the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships in Portugal.
In one of the final races of the day Pretoria stalwart Gustav Radloff took the gold medal in the K1 Men 50-54 race, cheered home by a large and vocal group of South African supporters on the banks of the river.
Seasoned Masters Cup racer Allan Hold got the ball rolling with a silver medal in the K1 Men 70-74 in a thrilling duel with eventual winner Brian Greenham of Great Britain, while fellow South African Pete O’Connor was close behind and secured the bronze medal.
Durbanite Paul Chalupsky added another medal when he finished third in the K1 Men 75+ race, with team mate Claude Graham in fourth.
The fourth medal on the opening day went to Pippa McGregor, who will be in action again on the weekend in the senior women’s K2 race with Jenna Nisbet.
McGregor added another silver medal to the team’s first day haul when she finished second to Argentinean Maria Collueque in the K1 Women 35-39 race.
Wayne Jacobs was a dominant force in the K1 Men 40-44 race and led the race on the final short lap, only to get pipped at the line by Japanese paddler Lajos Kyokos, securing the third silver medal for Team SA’s masters paddlers.
The Masters Cup moves on to the K2 races on Tuesday, followed by a practice day on the course ahead of the start of the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships proper on Thursday.
