Boxing | Boxing South Africa congratulates Tulani Mbenge on winning the IBO Welterweight Title

Hatfield, Pretoria – Boxing South Africa congratulates Tulani ‘Evolution’ Mbenge after being crowned the new IBO Welterweight Champion after beating Micheal McKison by a unanimous decision at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Hackney Wick in London on Saturday, 19 October 2024.

Tulani Mbenge on winning the IBO Welterweight Title

It was Mbenge’s second attempt on the IBO Welterweight title after he lost back in 2019, under controversial circumstances to Sebatian Formella in German, but there was no stopping the Cegcwane born this time around, as he sent home favourite, Micheal McKison packing to bring home the title.

The win is set to send a shock waves down the spine of the boxing world, as South Africa takes the centre stage after bringing home second title on the same week.
Mbenge would have been inspired by his compatriot Phumela Cafu who paraded his title in the streets of East London on Friday, after impressively winning away from home earlier in the week.

Micheal McKinson just like fellow Londoners Arsenal who lost against Bournemouth earlier on the day could not take the pressure from an aggressive South African who appeared to own the Londoner from round three (3) of the twelve (12) rounds to hand him only his second professional career defeat.

Tulani Mbenge now becomes the first two-time IBO Welterweight Champion in the history of this fistic sport.

It is an incredible journey of a young man that has had his own share of challenges since starting his boxing journey in the tender age of ten (10). There is no doubt that his victory will continue to inspire not only aspiring boxers in South Africa, but aspiring athletes from the peripheral parts of our country.

Boxing South Africa would like to congratulate Mbenge on his incredible victory wishing him and his Team all the best as they embark on a journey to defend the IBO Welterweight title.
