In a landmark year for modern pentathlon, South Africa will take centre stage as host of not one, but two major international championships. In July, Gauteng will fly the flag high as it stages the UIPM U17 Modern Pentathlon World Championships. Following this, Mossel Bay will showcase South Africa’s hospitality and sporting excellence in December as host of the UIPM Biathle, Triathle & Laser Run World Championships. These multidiscipline events, Biathle (run-swim-run), Triathle (run-shoot-swim), and Laser Run (runshoot), serve as vital stepping stones in the sport’s global development pathway, culminating in the full Modern Pentathlon.

Backed by the South African Modern Pentathlon Association (SAMPA), this event is about showcasing world-class performance while planting the seeds of lifelong multi-sport journeys.

“This is the future of modern pentathlon,” says Frans Van Niekerk, President of SAMPA. “Bringing it to life on South African soil is not only a tremendous honour, but a powerful statement about our country’s growing presence on the global sporting stage. Hosting two world-class events in a single year is a milestone achievement for South African sport."

The UIPM U17 Pentathlon World Championships are where raw talent meets Olympic ambition. It o\ers athletes critical international experience, testing their skills across all five disciplines under pressure conditions that mirror elite-level competition, laying the technical and mental foundation required for future Olympic qualification.

Modern Pentathlon has been a part of the Olympic Games since 1912, originally introduced by Pierre de Coubertin to reflect the skills of a complete soldier: fencing, swimming, horse riding, pistol shooting, and cross-country running. However, the sport has, since its last Olympic cycles, Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, undergone a transformative evolution to maintain relevance, audience engagement, and accessibility.

Athletes from around the world will now compete in the redefined five-discipline format, including the thrilling new addition of obstacle racing, a high-intensity challenge that replaces the traditional equestrian segment. This modern evolution tests speed, skill, and stamina like never before, adding a fresh, crowd-pleasing dimension to the sport.

Countries like Great Britain and Hungary have produced stars such as Joe Choong (GBR) and Michelle Gulyás (HUN) who have become internationally renowned for their standout performances on the world stage.

For South Africa’s promising young athletes, this is more than just a competition; it’s a proud moment to don the green and gold before a home crowd, to test themselves against the world’s elite, and to ignite the dreams of the next generation.

Leading the charge on home soil is Tatiana Thomatos, a standout talent who in 2024 captured gold at the U17 Pentathlon African Championships, the U17 Pentathlon PanAmerican Championships, and the U15 Tetrathlon World Championships.

Expect sparks to fly in Johannesburg; from the intense focus of fencing duels to the high-energy challenge of obstacle course racing, culminating in the endurance demanded by the laser run finale.

South Africa’s youth are ready. The world is watching. Let the next chapter begin.
