Ilhaam Amod's Dream Of Achieving Protea Colours

After years in the Karate competition arena, she finally represented South Africa at the prestigious AUSC UFAK Region South Championship in Swakopmund, Namibia, this past June. Competing against top karatekas from across southern Africa, Ilhaam’s hard work, dedication, and discipline shone brightly as she earned a bronze medal in this all-styles karate tournament, and was awarded her South African National Colours at the KSA awards ceremony in Durban in July.

Ilhaam's journey to the top has been a testament to her unwavering commitment. Ranked number 3 in South Africa for kumite in her division, she has shown exceptional performance, consistently earning gold medals at various national tournaments. Her recent triumph at the KSA Open Elite Championships in Durban, where she clinched another gold, has propelled her to the number 1 ranking in her division.

Ilhaam's next challenge is to represent South Africa as a Protea Athlete at the UFAK African Continental Championships in Tunisia this September and the Commonwealth Karate Championships in Dhaka. Ilhaam and Lamees (Ilhaam's sister) have a small home business that they are trying to get off the ground in order to assist them with the necessary funding required for their sporting activities. Ilhaam has been achieving goals one step at a time, and her ultimate goal is achieving South African Protea Colours and competing at
the World Olympic Games.

Ilhaam is a Junior coach for Karate Development athletes in her region (Ugu), as well as KZN. Her passion is Sports, and aims to study Sports Science after Grade 12. She believes in the potential of others, and she would like to be an advocate for women and girls in sport, especially GBV against women and children. Funding is the biggest hurdle and we would like to reach out to potential sponsors and perhaps become an ambassador for companies, whilst learning and growing as a passionate female in the sporting world.
