Lara van Niekerk won GOLD in the women’s 50m breaststroke as TeamSA got on the medals table on day two of the competition at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The T20 women’s cricketers lost their opener to New Zealand, but the men’s Sevens rugby players booked a quarter-final against Canada.

T20 Women (Group B): SA 154-7 lost to New Zealand 167-2 by 13 runs
TeamSA won the toss and put their opponents in to bat at Edgbaston. New Zealand were always travelling comfortably, with the lights on midway through the innings, and they reached 167-2 in their 20 overs. Suzie Bates top-scored for NZ with 91no, while 18 runs came off Ayabonga Khaka’s final over. Chloe Tryon’s 39 runs off 17 balls and Sune Luus (32 off 18) threatened to pull SA back into the contest, but they were always behind the run-rate in their chase.

Men’s Pool A: SA 2 Pakistan 2
Team SA opened their campaign with a 2-2 draw, with goals by Connor Beauchamp and Matthew Guise-Brown. SA, who had 52% of the possession, will feel a little unlucky to not win. However, they were denied the victory with a goal in the final minute by Afraz earning Pakistan a point.

Women’s singles, Section C, Round 3: Colleen Piketh lost 21-18 to Shae Wilson (Norfolk Island). Piketh now has a W1 L2 record

England led 12-0 at half-time and stretched away to consign Team SA to their fourth defeat of the Games

Team SA reached the quarter-finals by going through their pool unbeaten. They beat Malaysia 46-0, Tonga 36-5 and Scotland 34-0, conceding only one try in three games. Angelo Davids (3), Selvyn Davids, JC Pretorius and Shaun Williams crossed the tryline for SA, who led 10-0 at half-time.

Men’s 200m freestyle, heats: Matt Sates finished second in his heat in 1:48.25, while Andrew Ross finished fifth in 1:49.75. Sates qualified seventh fastest for the final, while Ross placed 18th overall and missed out
