In July 2023, all roads will lead to Amsterdam! Excitement is building within the groups that will represent the South African gymnastics community at the World Gymnaestrada taking place from 30 July to 5 August this year.
“World Gymnaestrada is a unique non-competitive gymnastics event held every four years where participants from various countries come together to celebrate the beauty of gymnastics.” says Caron Henry, World Gymnaestrada Project manager and Participation manager of Gymnastics South Africa. “It is the largest and most diverse gymnastics event in the world where athletes of all ages, genders, and skill levels perform together to showcase a wide range of gymnastics disciplines, including acrobatics, rhythmic gymnastics, trampolining, and tumbling, as well as different and diverse dance and cultural performances."
The World Gymnaestrada is set to witness a diverse representation of South Africa's gymnastics community as the final group of 171 individuals from a wide variety of age groups and different gymnastics disciplines are preparing for the event. Among them, are 133 first time participants who are eagerly looking forward to experiencing the thrill and excitement of the event first-hand.
Coming from six different provinces across the country, this promising group showcases the country’s passion and commitment towards gymnastics. The group from Gauteng will be the largest group with 46 participants, followed by the Western Cape with 45 participants, Eastern Cape with 37, KwaZulu Natal 21 gymnasts and the Northern Cape and Free State region combining with a total of 20 gymnasts.

“The team’s preparations are well underway for this event,” said Marti Heri, World Gymnaestrada Team manager and Development manager of Gymnastics South Africa. “This is a significant moment for our gymnasts who will not only get the opportunity to showcase the best home-grown gymnastics talent that South Africa has to offer, but who will also experience different cultures, make new friends from around the world, and learn from each other.”
“As a coach, there is no greater joy than being able to provide my gymnasts with the exhilarating experience of sending them abroad to participate in the world's largest gymnastics festival,” said Sharon Stepinski, Eastern Cape coach and team leader. “Having been fortunate enough to have participated in this event during my teenage years, I realised that such an experience leaves an indelible imprint on everyone who has the privilege of experiencing it. Hence, it was imperative for me to ensure that my gymnasts too have the opportunity to be a part of it all and create memories that they will cherish for a lifetime.”
