South Africa's Rope Skipping Team makes waves at the Rope Skipping World Championships in Colorado USA

Sonopo Tshilwane's Impressive Performance Highlights Team South Africa's Success

Gymnastics South Africa's Senior and Junior Rope Skipping teams are currently making waves at the ongoing International Jump Rope Union (IJRU) World Championships in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA. After two days of intense competition, South Africa has already hauled an impressive three silver medals while competing against the world’s finest rope skippers.

The event, held from 16 to 23 July has attracted a diverse range of jumpers, both, seasoned and promising young talents with the determination to make their mark on the global stage.

“The IJRU World Championships is the most prestigious event in the world of rope skipping, attracting top rope skippers from across the world to compete in various categories,” said Offering Tlaka, High Performance Manager of Gymnastics South Africa. “Participants display their rope skipping skills in different events, including Single Rope Speed Sprint, Single Rope Speed Endurance, Freestyle, and Double Dutch.”

The competition kicked off to a brilliant start for South Africa’s national team, thanks to Sonopo Tshilwane’s outstanding performance. He claimed an impressive three silver medals over the first two days of the competition in the Male 30+ category. Sonopo secured silver in the Single Rope Speed Sprint and Single Rope Speed Endurance and in the Freestyle events.

In an honour that reflect his dedication and talent, considering that he has competed in four world championships prior and this being his fifth, he was also asked to read the athletes oath during the opening ceremony.

Along with Tshilwane from Free State, representing South Africa is an exceptional group of rope skippers, each bringing their own skills and resilience to the championships, making their country proud with every routine. Among them are Kagiso Pholoholo, Thato Mabitso, Tshiamo Matlhoane, Diteko Matlape Mpho Seate (Coach) from North West Province,  Mkhululi Gosa, Malusi Tumtumana, and Buyisile Hubela from the Western Cape.

“The IJRU World Championships have only just begun, and there are many more events and categories yet to unfold over the next few days. “It’s great to see our rope skipping talent achieve on the global stage, especially now that we’ve launched the third edition of Skipnation, Gymnastics SA’s annual rope skipping challenge. This initiative is aimed at schools, clubs and the public and designed to promote exercise through rope skipping,” concludes Tlaka.
