Thursday was no different. Belgian rider William Junior Lecerf claimed the new Tour du Rwanda 2023 yellow jersey despite finishing 4th, with 6 seconds behind stage winner Callum Ormiston who put up a stunning solo sprint to clinch the 195.5-kilometre stage to Rubavu.

Ormiston, who rides for Team South Africa, pulled away from the three-man breakaway within 20 kilometres from the finish line and used four hours 59 minutes and 51 seconds, opening a six-second gap between him and second-placed Walter Calzoni of Q36.5 PRO Cycling Team and other 13 riders, including Lecerf.

Before coming to Kigali for the 15th edition of Tour du Rwanda, Ormiston had discussed the possibility of winning at least a single stage as his ultimate objective.

“I want to try and target one of the stages and try and get a result there. And obviously, if it’s possible a stage win would be amazing.” Ormiston told Global Peloton, adding that the level of Tour du Rwanda is getting higher each year with more and more pro teams coming here and bigger continental teams participating.

On Thursday, the young climber Callum Ormiston took advantage of the descent to break free from the pursuers and win his first stage of Tour du Rwanda in three attempts he has participated in the tour.

Who is going to Win Yellow Jersey?

For the past 5 days, we have had four riders exchange the coveted Visit Rwanda jersey. Apart from Ethan Vernon keeping it for the first two stages, the other three holders, Thomas Bonnet Henok Mulueberhane and Ethan Vernon, have won it once.

Rwandan youngster Eric Muhoza of Bike Aid once returned to the top 10 on General Classification (GC) and remains the best performing Rwandan rider after finishing 11th during stage 5. He now sits 7th on GC with 11 seconds behind the leading Belgian rider Lecerf.

The yellow jersey remains up in the air with Lecerf, who rides for Soudal Quick-Step, just 2 seconds behind second-placed Budiak Anatolii.

On Friday, riders will cover 157 km from Rubavu to Gicumbi, with quite some unforgiving climbs. Can Ormiston win it again?
