World Masters Hockey World Cup heads to Cape Town
Following the original delay of the World Masters Hockey World Cup 2021 due to the Covid Pandemic, SA Masters Hockey is excited for the postponed tournament to take place in Cape Town from 1-10 October 2022. 84 teams from more than 20 nations will battle out the competition to ultimately be declared World Champions of the various tournaments.
Field Hockey is regarded as the third most popular sport globally with 2 billion followers. The World Masters Hockey World Cup (WC) represents the pinnacle of competitive Masters Hockey (35 – 85 age) and is presented biannually at host cities identified by World Masters Hockey (WMH).
SA Masters has been granted the right to host the 2022 edition in Cape Town for both men and ladies in the following age categories: 45+; 50+; 55+, and 60+; 65+ Ladies. The WC is held over 10 days with teams competing in a round-robin pool stage followed by play offs. Every team will be involved in a seeding playoff match on the last two days of the WC which culminates in the age category finals.
The City of Cape Town and the Western Cape Government will be the primary sponsors for the tournament, and it will be hosted by The South African Masters Hockey Association. Matches will be played in and around the Western Province Cricket and Hockey Club and Hartleyvale Hockey Stadium, which will be the primary venues for the WMH World Cup.
Spectators and family members will also be allowed onto the sportsgrounds to watch the matches for free.
Reg Marais, President of SA Masters, believes that the WMH World Cup will represent a significant injection in the local economy as it is estimated that the participants could spend as much as R90 million during their stay in South Africa. SA Masters Hockey has also identified The Modified Hockey Programme as the legacy project which will enable local children to benefit from the World Cup.
The Opening Ceremony of the WMH World Cup Cape Town 2022 will be held on Friday 30th September 2022 at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront – (in front of the Zeitz Museum for Contemporary African Art in the Silo District) from 16h15 to 17h15.
