Masters Hockey stars weave their magic at World Masters Hockey World Cup Cape Town 2022
WMHWC2022 - Opening Day continues the high of the Opening Ceremony
The World Masters Hockey World Cup Cape Town 2022 launched its way into the history books by showcasing the best of the country and the City of Cape Town at an unforgettable opening ceremony. The Ceremony, which witnessed the 84 teams marching through the V&A Waterfront, set the tone for the opening day of action. That tone was class.
With the beating of the drums still resounding in the ears of each and every participant, the action got underway at three World Class Venues. Western Province Cricket Club, with their two turfs along with Hartleyvale and UCT were the venues offering blank canvases for the artists that were the Masters Hockey stars to weave their magic, make their mark and
create tales that would ultimately become folklore.
As if the opening ceremony wasn’t good enough, the opening game of all the tournaments was what can only be described as a humdinger. The United States and Malaysia continued the party from the previous evening on the turf at WPCC producing a 10-goal thriller. Both teams led at a point, both teams had to come from behind and both teams put the bar
down for the entertainment factor.
In the same competition the entertainment came at the other side of the park as a brilliant defensive battle between Germany and France saw only one goal scored, but the one goal was enough for the Germans to celebrate an opening day victory.
South African Icon Mike Cullen represented the country 199 times in his career and managed to don the green and gold for the 200th time in his Masters debut for the SA O45 Men as they comfortably saw off the challenge of African neighbors Zimbabwe.
In the Women’s O45 battle Argentina thought they had done enough at UCT to get a victory over the Dutch team but a late equalizer by Sacha Bal meant both teams settled for a share of the points after a brilliant battle.
In the 050 category, the Argentinean women were able to seal the victory having led against the hosts South Africa, the Africans had trailed 2-0 but a late Wendy Horn goal set up a grandstand finish for the two sides with the South Americans able to get the victory over the line.
England and Germany locked horns in the O55 Age group in a classic clash of the ages with England landing the win through a pair of Mandy’s. (Yes, I also sang Oh Mandy in my head as I typed that out). Hurworth and Gatherer both were on the scoresheet as the British side got off to a perfect start.
It was a day that produced 122 goals, with 71 being field goals and already countless memories. The competition will continue to raise as some teams open their campaigns on Sunday while others face the daunting task of a second game inside 24 hours. We can’t wait.
