African nations converge in Tshwane for Davis Cup

Eight national tennis teams from across Africa will converge in Tshwane on Tuesday when they turn out for the draw ahead of the highly anticipated 2023 Davis Cup Africa Group III tournament.

Hosted by Tennis South Africa (TSA) and the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the event will feature South Africa, Benin, Algeria, Namibia, Senegal, Togo, Ivory Coast and Zimbabwe, as they compete for coveted spots in the Davis Cup World Group II playoffs.

The teams will be split into two groups of four following the draw, to be held at the Sanctuary, Freedom Park in Tshwane at noon on Tuesday.

The round-robin group stage matches will be played at TuksTennis, University of Pretoria between Wednesday 9 August and Friday 11 August, and the playoff ties will be contested on Saturday 12 August.

The top teams in each group will be automatically promoted to the Davis Cup World Group II playoffs in 2024, along with the winner of the playoff between the two teams which finish second.

The bottom team in each group will be relegated to Africa Group IV next season.

Host nation South Africa are the top-ranked team in Africa, at No 67 in the global ratings, followed by Zimbabwe at No 72.

They are expected to face fierce opposition, however, with four other sides ranked among the top 90 in the international men's team competition.
