FIH Junior World Cup 2023 | South Africa name U21 Men’s squad

South Africa name U21 Mens squad for the Junior World Cup

In just over three weeks, the South African U21 Men are set to make a return to Malaysia, poised to participate with powerhouse nations in the upcoming Junior World Cup. The battlefield includes opponents like Germany, Egypt, and France, as South Africa gears up for a spirited competition with aspirations to secure a top-two finish, paving the way to the coveted Quarter Finals. Today, South African Hockey proudly reveals the lineup that will represent the nation on this grand stage.

Having recently immersed themselves in the Malaysian hockey scene during the Sultan of Johor Cup, the team faced a different opportunity as several players were unavailable for various reasons. Coach Guy Elliott, recognizing the need for depth and dynamism, provided an opportunity for some players to make a compelling case for their inclusion.

A standout addition to the roster is Mustapha Cassiem, who, despite missing the Malaysia stint, brings formidable credentials as the FIH Men’s World Cup Junior Player of the Tournament earlier this year. Cassiem now seizes the chance to showcase his exceptional skills at the Junior World Cup for the first time.

Noteworthy absentees from the Sultan of Johor Cup, including seasoned player Calvin Davis, goalkeeper Reece Govender, and Jeppe Boys star Jayden Brooker, have made a strong case for their inclusion. The team also benefits from the experience of stalwarts Nathan Ansell, Fawaaz Kahder, and Cameron le Forestier, who are poised to challenge the best in the world.

Expressing his thoughts, Head Coach Guy Elliott states, “The Sultan of Johor Cup served as a platform to fine-tune our strategies and explore different player combinations. We’re delighted to have identified a formidable squad through this process, ready to venture into Malaysia with a fierce determination to compete and make our country proud.”

Mark your calendars as South Africa kicks off their campaign against Germany on December 5th.
