COSAFA Women's Cup 2023 | Zimbabwe, Botswana victorious at women's regional championship

Group C was dubbed the 'Group of Death' and lived up to expectations after the results of match day two in the pool at the HOLLYWOODBETS COSAFA Women's Championship at Dobsonville Stadium on Monday.

Botswana showed no mercy against Lesotho as they put three goals past them without reply. The Mares, who made no changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Namibia in their opener, showed intention to score early in the first half with Lesego Radiakanyo denied by the defense in the opening three minutes while Obonetse Rathari was struck the woodwork from range a minute later.

It wasn't long before Botswana won a set-piece which captain Kesegofetse Mochawe sent Lone Gaofetoge's way and the latter made no mistake as she headed home to give her side the lead in the fifth minute.

Balothanyi Johannes could have made it 2-0 inside the first 15 minutes but her long-range shot went just over the bar.

With Botswana enjoying the lion's share of possession Radiakanyo tried her luck again and this time she was denied by the post. Lesotho got a clear chance at goal right after however only passed to the keeper.

Ten minutes to the break Johannes scored a stunner from a tight angle inside the box and extended Botswana's lead to 2-0 going into halftime.

In the second half Mohambi Saulos's side kept searching for another goal but that only came in the last 20 minutes of the encounter. Mochawe scored Botswana's third goal of the match and her second of the tournament from a similar position as Johannes, to hand her side a deserving victory.

The result eliminated Lesotho from the competition with a match to spare while Botswana remained in second spot on the group log with four points right behind leaders Zimbabwe, who defeated Namibia 2-0 in the second match of the day.

The Mighty Warriors were tested early on in the first half but their goalkeeper Cynthia Shonga pulled back to back super saves to deny the Gladiators an opener.

Veteran winger Rudo Neshamba nets the opener soon after assisted by Christabel Katano. Five minutes to the half hour mark Zimbabwe won a free-kick and Vimbai Mharadzi curled it to force Melissa Matheus to make a save and keep the score-line respectable.

Namibia almost equalized in the opening minutes of the second half through Azania Adams, who shot just over the bar. Before the hour mark Nobukhosi Ncube scored a beauty from a set-piece from range to make it 2-0.

Zimbabwe could have made it 3-0 soon after when Katona found Priviledge Mupeti, who only needed to tap home, however missed the target. Shadreck Mluauzi's charges are the only side yet to concede at this year's competition.

Meanwhile it's crunch time on day seven with the deciding Group B matches opening the day. Zambia and Comoros are at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Soweto campus while Angola face Mozambique in Dobsonville with both fixtures kicking off at 12:00 p.m.

Zimbabwe and Botswana take a walk
Zimbabwe continued its good run by dominating Namibia on Monday at Dobsonville Stadium (2-0) during the 6th day of the Hollywoodbets COSAFA Women's Championship. For its part, Botswana had a tough time against Lesotho, which it dominated 3-0.

Zimbabwe has resumed its good old habits, that is to say managing a match properly and above all winning. They proved it again on Monday by dominating a strong Namibian team 2-0. It must be said that during the 90 minutes of engagement, the battle was fierce between these two formations. But it was Zimbabwean realism that prevailed. In fact, Zimbabwe simply took advantage of their clear chances to open the scoring before taking off.

Nobukhosi Ncube opened the scoring for Zimbabwe. She took advantage of good work from her midfielder to score in the 18th minute. It was then imitated by Rudo Nishamba on the hour mark. This second victory in the group stage proves that Zimbabwe will be a credible candidate for the title, especially since its defense has not yet conceded a goal. Botswana recovered well after its opening draw. The Botswana women easily dominated Lesotho 3-0. In an almost one-sided match, the Lesothanes tried to create danger up front. However, their attempts were quickly contained by the opposing defense. They were also showered very early in this meeting after Lone Gaofetoge's goal in the 6th minute.

Recharged by this goal, the Batswana kept up the pressure. They made the break shortly after the hour mark thanks to Johannes. Far from being satisfied with two goals, Botswana multiplied the chances by taking advantage of a better-structured game. And it worked because in the 63rd minute, Mochawe also found the fault, thus sealing a big victory for the Blue and Black.

We are approaching the last matches of the first round for the teams in groups A and B. Suffice to say that there will be a great spectacle during the four matches scheduled for this Tuesday. Firstly, at the UJ Soweto Stadium, Zambia will face Comoros from midday. There will be little suspense in this match knowing that the Comorians are already eliminated from the tournament. However, they will have to apply themselves in order not to concede an avalanche of goals. For their part, the reigning champions only want one thing: to finish at the top of group B.

At the same time, but at Dobsonville Stadium, this will also be the objective of Mozambique who want to finish at the top of their group. With four points, the Mozambicans have their destiny in their hands, but watch out for Angola who remain in ambush with three points.

At 3:30 p.m., Madagascar, already eliminated from the competition, will try to heal its exit. But this is not going to be easy. The Malagasy will face Malawi, one of the favorite teams for the final victory. With 12 goals scored in two matches, the Malawians have the best attack in this championship and should further improve their statistics this Tuesday. South Africa still has its destiny in its hands. But the South Africans will have to work hard to avoid premature elimination. They face Eswatini and their mission will be to win the match while scoring as many goals as possible. Note that Eswatini can also claim to advance to the next round
