COSAFA Women's Cup 2023 | Malawi into semifinals after Chawinga magic in Gauteng
Temwa Chawinga was the star of the show on day four of the 2023 HOLLYWOODBETS COSAFA Women’s Championship in Dobsonville on Saturday as Malawi qualified for the knockout phase of this year’s tournament.
Chawinga scored four second-half goals as her side annihilated Eswatini 8-0 in a clash in Group A in the first match of the day.
She also increased her goal tally staying on top of the goal scorer charts with seven goals in two matches.
Sabinha Thom is the one who opened the scoring completing a brace in the first half while Carolyne Mathyola and Rose Kadzere also registered their names on the score sheet.
Malawi are at the summit of Group A table with six points followed by the host nation South Africa, who defeated Madagascar 3-1 in the second Group A match at the same venue to give themselves a qualifying lifeline.
A first half penalty converted by Thubelihle Shamase and a second half brace by Samkelisiwe Selana gave Banyana-Banyana all the three points and importantly a chance at fighting to qualify for the semi-finals. Anajrasoa Velomanantsolo scored for Madagascar.
The seven time champions are second on the Group standings with three points same as Eswatini who dropped to third due to goal difference.
The top three sides in all the groups and the best runner-up will progress to the knout phase. South Africa and Eswatini meet in the final Group match.
If either of them win that and Malawi lose their final pool fixture, the latter will remain top of the table on head-to-head.
The action continues in Group B on Sunday as Zambia take on Angola at 12h00 and Mozambique meet Comoros at 15h30. Both games are at Dobsonville Stadium.
