cosafa 2023 Angola win big Zambia held on day two in GautengAngola were the big winners on match day one in Group B at the HOLLYWOODBETS COSAFA Women's Championship at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Thursday as defending champions Zambia were held by Mozambique.

Sousa Garcia's Angolan charges were rampant as they defeated the Comoros Islands 5-0 on a hot day in South Africa's capital.

All the goals came in the opening half from Elsa Caupe in the opening five minutes, followed by Sara Luvunga after 20 minutes, Matondo Matuvova scored the third one while Paulina Sambo scored the fourth. The fifth goal was an unfortunate own goal from Anllaouia Hadhirami Ali in injured time of the opening stanza.

This result firmly puts Angola in pole position in the group with three points in a group containing the defending champions Zambia as well.

In the second match of the day, Zambia were held to a goalless draw by Mozambique who enjoyed great possession especially in the first half though there weren't any real chances at goal.

In the second half Copper Queens coach Florence Nkatya made early changes bringing Natasha Nanyangwe for Salome Phiri and Sarah Jere for Maylan Mulenga as they tried to get the opener however it wasn't to be as they struggled to get past Mozambique.

This is the only match to not produce a result and goals so far in the tournament. There has been 15 goals scored thus far, 10 from Group A opening day and the five from the first match in Group B.

Meanwhile the Mozambican Ladies occupy second spot on the log with a point followed by Zambia in third place also with one point and Comoros at the bottom with no point.

Angola freewheeling, Zambia neutralized
The second day of the Hollywoodbets COSAFA Women's Championship allowed Angola to showcase its power in attack. The Angolans won 5-0 against the Comoros. In the second match, Zambia, the reigning champion, struggled for a long time against enterprising Mozambicans. The match ended 0-0.

The Comorians put on two faces in this match. First, they completely missed their first half by conceding all five goals. Caupe took four minutes to open the scoring before Luvunga and Matuvova scored in quick succession in the 21st and 24th minutes . Sambo found the net after half an hour of play while the unfortunate Anllaouia scored against her side in added time of the first period. The second half was better controlled by the Comorians who offered a solid defensive curtain.

Zambia – outgoing champion – missed its debut in the competition. The Copper Queens were neutralized by valiant Mozambicans. There was no shortage of opportunities in this match and despite a slight domination by the Zambians, Mozambique was able to hold on and even benefited from several opportunities to unlock the scoreboard. But as the minutes ticked by, it became clear that the two teams were heading towards a share of points. This draw, however, suits the two teams who remain alive.

This Wednesday, it will be the residents of group C who will come into action. In the opening match, Zimbabwe will make their debut against Lesotho at midday. At 3:30 p.m., it will be Namibia's turn to take on Botswana. These two meetings promise to be very competitive given the forces involved.

Zimbabwe will make its return after several years. Obviously, Zimbabweans are hungry. They will have the opportunity to prove that they have lost none of their aggression although after such a long absence, it will be interesting to see what Zimbabwe can produce on the field. Lesotho for its part remains a team trying to find a place in the sun. This team never made it through the group stage. Note that Zimbabwe won the competition in 2011.

Namibia finished just off the podium last year. The Namibians aim to have a decent tournament this time and which could help them win a medal. Obviously, the mission does not look easy because there is Botswana on the other side. Botswana women are renowned for their physical play. They will certainly offer good opposition.
