Day 2 (Sun): How Team SA fared at Commonwealth Youth Games

Swimming’s Jessica Thompson (pictured) took Team SA’s medals tally to two when she claimed the GOLD medal in the women’s 50m butterfly at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago. This is a summary of how Team SA fared on day 2 of competition.

Day 2 (Sun): How Team SA fared at Commonwealth Youth Games

BEACH VOLLEYBALL
Jayden Cupido and Valaitham Deloshen (men) lost 2-0 to Jett Rocker-Graham and Mitchell Croft of Australia (21-13, 21-0)
Jayden Cupido and Valaitham Deloshen (men) won 2-0 against Julian Bristol and Sundar Prakash of Pakistan (21-16, 22-20)

RUGBY SEVENS
Men’s Group A: South Africa beat Jamaica 63-0 at Shaw Park Field. The score was 35-0 at halftime. Try scorers: James Nero (2), Lavela Pongolo (1), Gino Cupido (2), Luan Gilomee (2), Siyabonga Ndlozi (2). Conversions: Luan Gilomee (5), Lavela Pongolo (1), Siyanda Nkosi (3)

Men’s Group A: South Africa beat Trinidad & Tobago 59-0 at Shaw Park Field. The score was 28-0 at halftime. Try scorers: Siyanda Nkosi (3), Thando Ntshangase (2), Siyabonga Ndlozi (1), Bernardo Diedericks (1), Gino Cupido (1)

SWIMMING
Jessica Thompson (women’s 50m butterfly, heat 6): Swimming in lane four she won her heat in 26.89 to qualify fastest for the evening final. She broke Erin Gallagher’s Commonwealth Youth Games record
GOLD! Jessica Thompson (women’s 50m butterfly, final): The teenager broke Erin Gallagher’s Commonwealth Youth Games that stood since 2015 for the second time in a day when she claimed gold in 26.84.

Cassidy Burgess (women’s 50m butterfly, heat 6): Swimming in lane six she finished fourth in 29.32. That saw her 16th quickest after the heats and she didn’t progress to the final

Jarden Eaton (men’s 50m butterfly, heat 4): Placed third in a time of 25.06, with the heat won by Nick Finch of England in 24.32

Kris Mihaylov (men’s 200m freestyle, heats): Placed second in his heat in 1:52.46 to qualify for the final as sixth fastest
Kris Mihaylov (men’s 200m freestyle, final): Placed eighth in the final in 1:53.56 in a race won by home hero Nikoli Blackman of Trinidad & Tobago

Jarden Eaton (men’s 200m freestyle, heats): Placed seventh in his heat in 1:55.19 to qualify 16th fastest and miss out on a place in the final

Jessica Thompson (women’s 100m backstroke, heats): Finished second in her heat in 1:03.78, which left her in fifth place overall heading into the final
Jessica Thompson (women’s 100m backstroke, final): Placed fifth in the final in 1:03.04, in a race won in 1:01.96 by Scotland’s Holly McGill

Cassidy Burgess (women’s 100m backstroke, heats): Placed third in her heat in 1:04.42 which saw her qualify seventh fastest for the final
Cassidy Burgess (women’s 100m backstroke, final): Placed seventh in the final in 1:04.67, in a race won in 1:01.96 by Scotland’s Holly McGill

Simone Moll (women’s 200m breaststroke, heats): Finished fourth in her heat in 2:37.68, which saw her qualify for the final eighth fastest
Simone Moll (women’s 200m breaststroke, final): She improved on her morning time by finishing her race in 2:36.11 which was good enough to see her place seventh in a final won by Northern Ireland’s Ellie McCartney

Kian Keylock (men’s 200m breaststroke, heats): Finished third in his heat in 2:19.51 which left him as fifth fastest of the qualifiers heading into the final
Kian Keylock (men’s 200m breaststroke, final): Finished fourth and missed out on a medal by just 0.23 seconds, with gold being won by England’s Oscar Bilbao

TRIATHLON
Kadence Ribbink (girls super sprint): Only six seconds off the bronze medal of Namibia’s Maja Brinkmann when finishing fourth in the final. Completed the swim in 4:19, the bike in 18:19 and the run in 10:32 for an overall time of (transitions included) 34:04. Australia’s Aspen Anderson took the gold
Angel Geel (girls super sprint): Did Not Finish
Alessandro Fanicchi (men’s super sprint): Placed eighth out of 25 competitors, in 31:38, with gold won by Luke Holmes, of Jersey, in 29:47
