Nare prevails in 10km thriller in Mbombela
Defending champion Tadu Nare (Nedbank) of Ethiopia enjoyed a thrilling victory over teammate Helalia Johannes of Namibia in the SPAR Grand Prix Women’s 10km race in Mbombela on Saturday. She finished in 32min 43sec and Johannes in 33:02.
Ethiopian junior runner Selam Gebre was third in 33:12. Glenrose Xaba (Boxer) was the first South African home, in 33:37. Kesa Molotsane (Murray & Roberts) was fifth in 33:44.

World Games: How Team SA Fared (Day 9)

There were five Team SA athletes in action in the 2022 World Games in Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday. Conditions were again described as “brutally hot” on the penultimate day of the competition. Dylan Kruger and Jonathan Benjamin competed in the men’s duathlon, Natalie Sterk took part in the women’s duathlon and sport climbing was represented by Lauren Mukheibir and Mel Janse van Rensburg.

Tennis South Africa (TSA) and Growthpoint Properties are delighted to announce that the Growthpoint Top Guns national club tennis tournament will return this September for the fifth year running. The Growthpoint Properties’ sponsored tournament will feature both men and women in a doubles team competition with over R200 000.00 in prize money up for grabs. Meintjes second on L’Alpe d’Huez after heroic ride
South Africa’s Louis Meintjes finished second behind Britain’s Tom Pidcock in Thursday’s 12th stage of the Tour de France, a 165.1km Alpine trek between Briancon and L’Alpe d’Huez.
Pidcock, riding for Ineos-Grenadiers, prevailed from the day’s breakaway with an attack 3.3 km into the final climb, a 13.8km effort at an average gradient of 8.1 percent.

Team SA’s Andy Birkett struck gold at the 2022 World Games being held in Birmingham, Alabama, when he won the men’s canoe marathon, K1 standard distance final.
Birkett won the grueling event in 1hr 23min 52sec, finishing 30 seconds ahead of Denmark’s silver medallist Mads Brandt Pederesen.

Final names added to Team SA for Birmingham
The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) announced an additional 61 athletes to the Team South Africa squad that will carry the nation’s flag at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, which will take place from 28 July to 8 August.
This was the second and final squad announcement following the first one last month and it brings the total number of athletes to 251.
More representatives across six codes were named – athletics, hockey, badminton, wrestling, swimming and gymnastics.
