RESULTS: 21 more medals for Team SA on Monday

The medals came thick and fast for Team SA at the African Games on Monday with a rich haul of 21 on the day taking them to 50.

The first medal came early in the day when Banele Mhango claimed bronze in the men’s blitz invitational. It was a strong performance from the chess player, who took part in nine rounds, winning four and drawing one.

In weightlifting both Jon Antohein-Phillips and Anneke Spies picked up, literally, six medals – three bronze and three silvers.

 In wrestling, Ben Theron claimed a bronze, before the inevitable rush in the swimming pool.

Catherine van Rensburg, Caitlin de Lange, Jonah Pool-Jones and the women’s 4x200m freestyle won gold, Kate Meyer, Matthew Caldwell, Jarden Eaton, Tayla Jonker and the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team took silvers and Georgia Els, Cameron Casali, Hannah Mouton and Andrew Ross claimed bronze.

 Team SA are through to the final of the inaugural women’s T20 cricket Tournament being held at the 13th African Games. They were sent in to bat by opponents Uganda and reached an impressive 122 for 4 in their 20 overs, with captain Nondumiso Shangase hitting 38 runs off 42 balls. When it came to their turn with the ball, all of Kayla Reyneke (3-13), Jane Winster (2-12) and Shangase (2-15) were amongst the wickets.
