Some surprises as WP championships are decided

There were some surprises among the fights down to the line to crown the Western Cape’s 2022 Rotax Max Challenge karting champions at Saturday’s Killarney finale.

The premier DD2 gearbox class drew a strong entry with national circuit racers Jurie Swart and Jason Coetzee joining the fray, but nobody could stop Sebastian Boyd from marching to a triple victory from an impressive Masters winner after Joseph Oelz hit trouble and Swart and Coetzee were excluded an on-track contretemps.

Masters champion Conor Hughes did not have a perfect day in Masters however, as a delighted Jared Jordan stole the second heat win to pip second in the first and third heats, Marco Viegas to second, with Andrew Thomas fourth from Andre Steenkamp and Neville Chapman.

It was super-tight in Senior Max. Matthew Wadeley arrived with a tight 2-point advantage over Ethan Stier, who won the opening race to move ahead in the title chase. But Wadeley responded with wins in the second and third races to pip Stier to the day with Zac Laden and Jaden Jacobs in pursuit, to also take the title.

It was a mere formality for Reese Koorzen to wrap up the under-15 WP Rotax Junior Max championship, but he did it in style with another dominant triple win over Ethan Deacon and impressive Mini Max graduate Jordon Wadeley. Ashton Repsold took fourth on the day from Oliver Roach and Jude Stuart.

Keagan Beaumont was another who needed only to finish the opening heat to take the Cape under-13 Mini Max title, but he still romped to a dominant triple victory to seal his title in style. Matthew Chiwara and Jordon Wadeley shared out the second and third places on the day ahead of Sabelo Ntuli and Liam Koekemoer.

Matthew Roach took a slender under-11 Micro Max lead into the finale. But rivals Aiden Beaumont hurt his wrist and Michael Danks was excluded from heat 1 for passing under yellow, so Roach took the three wins, the day, and the title. Nicolas Lennox was second from Michael O'Mahoney, Zach McAuley, Liam Wharton and Ruben Gelderblom.

Liam Wharton did just enough to hold the flying Michael O’Mahoney off for the baby Bambino title. O’Mahoney won all three heats, leaving Wharton to fight Jayden van der Merwe and Zac Boshoff off for second, ahead of Carter Cedras and Caleb Lingeveldt.

That wraps up the 2022 Western Cape Rotax Max title, leaving only the Gauteng champion to be crowned, but not before the best from each province and elsewhere in SA head to represent South Africa at the ‘Olympics of Karting’ Rotax Max Grand Finals in Portimão, Portugal from the 19th to the 26th of November.
