SupaCup rookie, veteran fight on in the Cape
Rookie sensation Leyton Fourie and seasoned campaigner Jeffrey Kruger head to the Cape Town Killarney International Raceway’s penultimate sixth round National Extreme Festival races on Saturday 17 September to continue their fight for the 2022 SupaCup championship.
Reigning Polo Cup champion, Johannesburg youngster Fourie and his Express Hire car, and Universal Racing teammate Kruger have shared out the wins and second places over the past two rounds. There has been little to choose between them. Only Fourie has scored five of the six bonus points in those last four races versus Kruger’s one. All of which sets up a most intriguing championship battle into the last four heats of the all-Volkswagen Supa Polo season.
It’s even closer for third. Ever consistent Vereeniging racer Arnold Neveling has clawed his way up after missing the opening race weekend in his Pagid Polo. He arrives even on points in third with Team Perfect Circle Jozi driver Keagan Masters. Masters will however miss Killarney to race abroad, with tin-top star Regard Roets stepping in as locum for the weekend. Keegan Campos is close enough to make it a threesome for third as he returns after missing the previous round in his Turn1 Insurance Campos Transport Polo SupaCup.
Behind them, it’s an interprovincial stand-off for sixth between impressive Gauteng newcomer JP van der Walt’s Platinum Wheels car and Capetonian Danie van Niekerk, who can be expected to be a significant factor on home ground. They have two more Jozi lads, Jason Campos’ second Turn1 Insurance Campos Transport car, and Tato Carello on their case too.
None of the above sit safe in their championship positions. Volkswagen factory drivers Jonathan Mogotsi’s Sonax Supa Polo and Daniel Rowe’s Perfect Circle Polo are literally tearing up through the championship table. Both re-joined the SupaCup fray after the tragic loss of the team's GTC cars in May. Also keep an eye out for Trinity Security brothers Nathan and Damian Hammond and the possibility of another exciting SupaCup entry said to be set for a Killarney debut.
Masters’ leader Nick Davidson has all but wrapped up the old man’s championship in his yellow and red Stu Davidson Construction machine. Just a finish in race 1 will clinch it, but Nick will also be out to continue his streak of overall Masters’ wins to six out of six in the Cape. Locally based Scotsman Paul Luti sits second in the Masters’ chase with racer Andre Bezuidenhout dealing with Rui Campos for third. Also watch for Stefan Snyders, Sam Hammond, and Paarl driver Dawie Joubert.
SupaCup races alongside the Global Touring Cars as part of a full National Extreme Festival program at the Killarney International Raceway, Saturday 17 September.
Volkswagen thanks its partners CompCare Medical Scheme, Dunlop, Sonax, Motul and VW Genuine Parts.
