Championship leaders’ new car debuts in Tzaneen
MRF Tyres South African Rally Championship leaders Chris Coertse and SA champion navigator Greg Godrich bring an extra headache to Tzaneen for their title rivals this weekend. They will debut a brand-new Rally Technic Mazda2 Rally2 in the NTT Rally following the car’s launch at BB Mazda Tzaneen on Thursday evening.
Coertse and Godrich have enjoyed a strong season so far aboard their Rally Technic Hyundai with a string of wins and podium finishes to their name over the first six rounds. Now the time is right for a step up to their all-new FIA Rally2 specification Mazda2. “We hold a strong championship advantage and with our rivals bringing ever-faster cars, we thought it would be appropriate to respond,” Chris Coertse explains.
“There are several reasons that this is an important move. “First and foremost, we’re delighted to have Mazda’s support for this project, which is not only a vital step for the SA Rally Championship, but it also helps us better combat our factory rivals. “It also means we have an extra car in the top NRC 1 class, as our old car will continue, to make the spectacle an even more thrilling prospect.”
The all-new made in South Africa Rally Technic Mazda2 is built to FIA Rally2 Kit specification. The SA Rally Championship adopted these turbocharged 1600 cc all-wheel drive regulations in an effort to return the local stage sport to its halcyon glory. Locally built by Rally Technic under the expert guidance of Chris and brother Roelof Coertse, the new Mazda2’s progress will be closely watched in the NTT Tzaneen Rally’s on Friday and Saturday.
