Reshuffle tightens close CompCare Polo Cup battle

The Killarney International Raceway will host the sixth and penultimate round of the CompCare Polo Cup Saturday 17 September, where a strong contingent of local young guns will be out to regain a championship advantage. Four of the Polo Cup championship top six are Cape based, setting the tone for a thrilling day of racing between South Africa’s finest young driving talent.

There’s only one championship point in it between championship top two, Gqeberha driver Clinton Bezuidenhout’s Stu Davidson Construction car and Capetonian Jurie Swart and his Bullion IT Racing Polo Cup. Swart had led the title chase from the outset, also at Killarney in March, but Bezuidenhout steadily picked away at his advantage and slipped ahead at the previous round in East London.

Neither of them has room to manoeuvre. The next three cars up are all within fourteen points of leader Bezuidenhout. Universal Racing Team Red lad Dawie van der Merwe threw a cat among the Polo Cup pigeons last time out with a grand slam of pole position, two race wins and a fastest lap to leap into the championship third place, nine points off the lead. Mbombela, Mpumalanga driver van der Merwe’s Killarney pace  will be watched with interest versus the locals on Saturday.

Three more Capetonians follow on the championship log. 16-year old Angri Racing driver Tate Bishop won a heat at Killarney last time out. He sits even on points with Universal Raving compatriot Charl Visser. Another Cape man, Giordano Lupini’s Bullion IT car sits sixth in the chase. Pole man at the last Killarney round, first year turbo Cup driver Lupini has consistently racked up the points and is a Killarney dark horse.

Lupini however has a significant gang of Gauteng drivers on his case, not least of all, Nathi Msimanga’s Squadra Corse car right on his tail, with the ever-improving  Dean Venter’s VDN Auto entry next up from another driver who has come on in leaps and bounds, Universal rookie Jagger Robertson. His Universal rookie teammate Ethan Coetzee will likely sit this one out as he recuperates following has scary crash last time out.

Kalex lass Karah Hill is the rose among the thorns and she has the unenviable task of fending multiple hot rod champion Jason Loosemore’s Universal Security Fencing & Alarms Polo off in the championship chase. Others to look out for include Bryce Pillay, Xolela Njumbuxa and Mo Karodia, while a fifth Cape driver, Nathan Victor makes his Polo Cup debut at his home track, so he cannot be ignored either

So, it’s all to play for at Killarney’s penultimate sixth round CompCare Polo Cup racing as part of a full National Extreme Festival program Saturday 17 September.
