Killarney bracing for explosive Alert GTi Action
The Alert Engine Parts Western Cape GTi Challenge returns to familiar territory at Killarney in Cape Town for its seventh round races on Saturday 3 September. The series visited Aldo Scribante in Port Elizabeth for its annual away race earlier in the month, but there’s everything to play for back at home this weekend.
The main championship fight is now for overall honours, since all three classes have runaway leaders. Jurie Swart tops Class A by just a handful of points in his Summit Racing Polo, over both 16-year Class B lad Tate Bishop’s Angri Jetta 2 CLI, and Class C leader Chase Herholdt’s Unlimited Auto Golf 1 GTi. The 2022 overall title is now between the three of them, so Saturday’s races are critical to all three camps.
Swart has old rival Marco Busi’s Automan Simtech machine to deal with in the all-Polo 6R Class. Busi however has ITT lad Colin Meder all over him in the championship log, with Jason Coetzee’s Mint Wraps machine, Unlimited Auto lad Kai van Zyl, Summit Racing's Nathan Victor and Dillon Joubert’s TAC Steel Polos, Charl Visser, Raazleigh Harris and Schalk Geldenhuys all in for their pound of top class flesh too.
Bishop has had Class B to himself, since champion Eden Thompson missed the last few races in his Somerset Refrigeration Polo. Ian Kapp’s Hydracor Polo 6R and Class C champion Kyle Wiltshire’s Summit Polo are always a threat, with new C graduate John-Henri Vaughan and veteran Zaki Hendrix also in the mix. And never discount Marc Thompson and Brent van der Schyff’s Polos, Steven Vermaak, Grant Cloete and Daniel Sandenbergh's Golfs, or Wayne Field’s Jetta either.
Chase Herholdt is in charge of the Class C Brat Pack. But this wild all-Golf 1 GTi class is always ready to shock. Expect Dylan and Ryan van Eden, Seth van den Abeele and Veldt Reared lad Matthew Rowe to surprise. And keep an eye on rookies Mo and Tahier Khalpey, Jade Lynch, Ruan Uys and Sulaiman Effendi this weekend.
The Alert Engine Parts WP GTi Challenge races on Killarney’s full spring weekend 3 September Power Series race program. Expect thrills and spills all the way!
