Football | UJ Senior Women’s football team off to scorching start in Hollywoodbets Super League

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) Senior Women’s football team has ignited the 2024 Hollywoodbets Super League, displaying remarkable prowess with a stunning seven-goal tally in only two matches.

Securing consecutive victories against First Touch FC (4-1) in Lebowakgomo, Limpopo, and JVW FC (3-1) in Soweto, Johannesburg on Sundays, March 3 and 10, 2024, UJ has established itself as a formidable force in the competition.

Dominant start for the Orange Army

The Orange Army, as UJ is affectionately known, has confidently claimed a perfect six points from the two games. Shannon Macomo set the tone by opening the scoring from the penalty spot in Lebowakgomo, and later earning her the coveted Player of the Match award at the Soweto Stadium.

New signings shine

UJ’s new signings played a crucial role in their success. Gugu Dhlamini capitalised on a JVW FC defensive error to score in the 4th minute of the opening half. Ten minutes later, Thato Mofolo doubled UJ’s lead by pressuring JVW FC and Banyana Banyana goalkeeper Kaylene Swart after Boitumelo Rasehlo’s back pass to her goalkeeper. Dhlamini, who came on as a substitute in Limpopo, also scored UJ’s fourth goal against First Touch FC.

UJ maintained control throughout the second half. Dhlamini nearly extended their lead with a free kick that rattled the crossbar, but Bryden Mokobi, returning to the team this year, converted the rebound to make it 3-0. JVW managed a consolation goal from a short corner just before the final whistle.

UJ chasing top spot

The UJ Senior Women’s team currently sits second in the league table, level on points with Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies FC but with a slightly inferior goal difference (6-5). The team’s strong start bodes well for their title aspirations in the Hollywoodbets Super League.
