Wayde van Niekerk wins the men’s 400m at the Gala dei Castelli
Another season’s best for Van Niekerk in 400m

Wayde van Niekerk continued his end-of-season resurgence when he won the men’s 400m at the Gala dei Castelli in Bellinzona, Switzerland, on Monday night.
The South African, who holds the world record at 43.03sec, set when he won the gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, had clocked a season’s best 44.39 in the pre-programme at the Diamond League-meeting in Zurich last week.
Last night Van Niekerk, who had not qualified in time to compete at the Commonwealth Games, continued his late surge when he sprinted to the line in 44.38, a hundredth of a second off his previous best time of the season.
It was the 10th fastest time in the world this year. The South African narrowly defeated the 2012 Olympic Games gold medallist, Grenada’s Kirani James, who clocked 44.38 to take second. South Africa’s Zakhiti Nene (45.75) rounded out the podium.
The men’s 100m saw Team USA take first and third with Brandon Carnes clocking a 10.04 to win and Kendal Williams taking bronze at 10.05. Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya (10.05) came in second. South Africa’s Akani Simbine finished fifth in 10.21 seconds.
