The African Games are the continents multi-sport event held every four years. Hockey in 2024 returns to the games for the first time since 2003 in Nigeria. The African Hockey Federation has announced the fixtures for the tournament taking place from 15-22 March 2024.
The Men’s tournament will be battled out between Egypt, South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and hosts Ghana. We knew the gold rush would come and it duly did. Team SA started Saturday at the 13th African Games with five medals to date – all bronze. By the time they switched off the lights at the athletes village that tally had swelled to 13. That left them second on the overall medals table, behind Egypt.

What is it that Generation Z says when a plan comes together? “Boom”. Well, it was a case of “BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!” as Team South Africa scooped another four gold medals at the African Games on Sunday, to go with the five that they picked up on Saturday.
So, all in all, a really fruitful weekend for Team SA who closed off with 29 medals, which leaves them second behind Egypt on the overall medals table. On Saturday they had signed off with 13 medals and added another 16 to that on Sunday.

The medals came thick and fast for Team SA at the African Games on Monday with a rich haul of 21 on the day taking them to 50.
The first medal came early in the day when Banele Mhango claimed bronze in the men’s blitz invitational. It was a strong performance from the chess player, who took part in nine rounds, winning four and drawing one.
In weightlifting both Jon Antohein-Phillips and Anneke Spies picked up, literally, six medals – three bronze and three silvers.
