A new book, South African Champion, will tell the incredible story of Single Seater, Specials, Formula 1 and Grand Prix Racing in Southern Africa.

South African Champion
Commencing at the turn of the previous century when the first race went down in the throes of the Anglo Boer War, the story follows the revolutionary days of record breakers and racing pioneers, from where it spans 125 years to the present day.

The book moves on to the early days after World War I and into the early South African Grands Prix. Then again after WWII, from which a glorious new generation of South African Specials racers emerged through to the early ‘60s. That’s when South Africa not only hosted a Grand Prix again, but it ran its unique National Formula 1 Championship through to the mid-’70s.

From there, while the Grands Prix continued, the local sport morphed into more affordable categories, Formula Atlantic, Formula SA and through to the current mix. Currently in production, the publishers hope to have copies of the large format coffee table book South African Champion on sale in time for the 2024 Festive Season.

“The book South African Champion not only tracks an incredible history, but it also represents a quarter-century effort to adequately capture, relate and tell a truly epic story,” author and publisher Michele Lupini explains. “Much of this history is no longer freely available. South African Champion strives to deliver a full and representative timeline of Single Seater, Specials and Formula 1 history in Southern Africa.”

Price and availability, as well as a little more info on the content, size and pagination of South African Champion will be confirmed in due course, when pre-orders will open via an online book portal.
