South African wheelchair tennis stars Alwande Sikhosana and Leon Els made a powerful statement on the opening day of the African Para Games in Accra, Ghana. Both players delivered commanding performances in their respective singles first-round matches.

Sikhosana, ranked No.1 on the continent, secured a flawless victory with a score of 6-0, 6-0 against Tanzanian competitor Albert Churu. Meanwhile, Els smoothly eased past Ghana's Daniel Laryea with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win.

In the upcoming round, Sikhosana will face off against Terlumun Ukari of Nigeria, while Els will also take on a Nigerian opponent, Oluwadamilare Alex.

The African Para Games is one of four regional multisport events in 2023, alongside the European Para Games, the Asian Para Games, and the Parapan American Games, all of which will include wheelchair tennis tournaments with ITF 2 Series status on the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour.

The winners of the African Para Games will earn direct qualification slots for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
