Sasol and WBSA continue to celebrate International Day of Disabled Persons
Johannesburg, 13 December - Sasol, in partnership with Wheelchair Basketball South Africa (WBSA), hosted an event to celebrate International Day of Disabled Persons. The event focused on educating Sasol employees and the Sasolburg community on wheelchair basketball and followed the Africa Zone IWBF U25 Women's Wheelchair Basketball World Championship qualifiers that Sasol AmaWheelie Girls won last week.
According to the United Nations organisation, the annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992 by United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. It aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development and to increase awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life*.
Sasol has been in partnership with WBSA since 2009. Early on, the company sponsored the senior men's team before expanding to sponsor the senior women's team. By sponsoring the players, they were able to reach international levels and participate in international events.
The day was filled with fun activities, which included an AmaWheela Challenge 3x3 exhibition game between the national team members. This was followed by a coaching clinic where able-bodied guests were given lessons on how to move in the wheelchair, and finally, the guests participated in a hoop shoot challenge, winning prizes.
Michelle Moganedi, Captain of AmaWheelie Girls shared her journey and experience of being part of the team. She thanked Sasol for the opportunities and support that they continue to provide to the teams, which enable them to live their dreams – doing things that some people might consider impossible.
Thandile Zonke, former Vice Captain of the Sasol AmaWheelaBoys, extended his sincere gratitude to Sasol for the exposure and experience that the day provided him. “Being able to showcase and educate the guests about wheelchair basketball so they can understand the sport makes me happy. Hopefully, we will be able to have this activation in different communities so they can not only understand the sport but also support the national teams during big tournaments.”
The event was attended by Dean Somerset, Sasol's Manager, Brand and Sponsorship, who also participated in the day’s activities. He said, “It is such a pleasure and honour to be able to present our sponsorship property to our internal staff as well as to the community of Sasolburg. We hope that such an event will enable key stakeholders to take interest in wheelchair basketball and begin to attend all tournaments that our national teams participate in locally.”
