Basketball | Jozi Nuggets Ladies crowned ICSL champions for 2024
In a season where the battle for the championship was more off the court than within the lines, Jozi Nuggets ladies did the business on the court during the Finals. The sombre atmosphere when the final buzzer went off showed that no one wanted or expected the GoldNBlue to win the championship.
Regular season and playoff games are vastly different and it all boils down to scouting and preparation for the game that really matters. The Jozi Nuggets ladies got to the playoffs with one loss against Celtic’s Finest and when the guns were drawn during the finals the opposite happened.
The struggle to finish the season saw games being played mid week and it’s a real struggle to get players on the ladies side due to family and school commitments. Teams would just bring enough players not to get a forfeit. Teams played as much as 4 games in a 7 day period and rotation of players was key during that period.
Playioffs came and the games pitted Celtic’s Finest against Wits LadyBucks, Jozi NuggetsBC against AlexBC. Celtic’s Finest won by 20 and Jozi NuggetsBC scrapped through with a 10 point win.
The finals became a David Vs Goliath affair as Celtic’s Finest had not lost a game all season. First half Finest came out guns blazing and took a 10 point lead but was cut to 6 points at the half time break. The 3rd quarter became a make or break for Jozi NuggetsBC as they pushed to catch up and they got the lead just before the 3rd quarter break. Fourth quarter became a chess game as both coaches tested each other to try and steal the game. Patience and hard defense gave the Jozi Nuggets the title and got crowned champions for 2024, final score 66-52!
