Team SA’s Akani Simbine finished fifth in the men’s 100m final at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon in 10.01sec. The gold medal was won by Fred Kerley of the United States in 9.86. Silver went to Marcion Braxy (US) in 9.88 and bronze to another American, Trayvon Bromell, also with 9.88.

Simbine had qualified for the final by winning his semi-final in 9.97, which was the fastest qualifying time heading into the final. It was the third time in history that the USA filled the men’s 100m. It happened in Helsinki in 1987 and in Tokyo in 1991.

In the men’s 110m hurdles Antonio Alkana finished fifth in his heat in 13.64, but did not qualify for the next round.

In the women’s 10 000m final, Dominique Scott-Efurd finished 17th in 31min 40.73sec. The gold medal was won by Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Giudey with the fastest time in the world this year of 30:09.94.

In the men’s 400m hurdles heats, Sokwakhana Zazini progressed to the next round with a time of 50.09. He finished fifth in his heat but qualified for the semi-finals as the fastest loser.

In the women’s 100m heats, Carina Horn finished fourth in her heat in 11.29 and did not qualify for the next round.

In the men’s 1500m heats, Mafori Mphahlele finished 12th in his heat in 3:39.17 and didn’t qualify for the final
