World Games: How Team SA Fared (Day 9)

There were five Team SA athletes in action in the 2022 World Games in Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday. Conditions were again described as “brutally hot” on the penultimate day of the competition. Dylan Kruger and Jonathan Benjamin competed in the men’s duathlon, Natalie Sterk took part in the women’s duathlon and sport climbing was represented by Lauren Mukheibir and Mel Janse van Rensburg.

DUATHLON
Women’s Duathlon, final: Natalie Sterk placed 8th with a total time of 2hr 11min 18sec. Gold was won by Belgium’s Maurin Ricour. There was drama in the final as the race favorites were overtaken by a chase group that cut the course, while other athletes ended up cycling more than they had to. It resulted in 11 disqualifications and only eight finishers.
Men’s Duathlon, final: Dylan Kruger finished 11th in 1:56:37, while Jonathan Benjamin placed 22nd in 1:57:56.
SPORT CLIMBING
Men’s Lead qualifying: Mel Janse van Rensburg placed 12th with a hold reached score of 19+. He didn’t progress to the final.
Women’s Lead qualifying: Lauren Mukheibir placed 14th with a hold reached score of 14. She didn’t progress to the final.
Today’s final day sees Team SA take part in the duathlon mixed relay final.
